RARE 1920s Walther Toggle Action Automatic Shotgun 12 Gauge – TESTED AND WORKING

This is a Walther Automatische Schrotflinte – the Walther Automatic Shotgun. Frequently called the Walther Toggle Action due to its unique, Luger-inspired action, these are extremely interesting shotguns made in Germany between the World Wars. Most notable are the rotary charging handle used for cocking the bolt, and the drop-down magazine system to facilitate loading. This gun’s serial number puts it as an early production example, though it sports a few of the upgraded features that Walther added, such as the dust cover bolt and finger hump trigger guard.
This shotgun’s barrel sports the original full choke and factory front sight ramp. It patterns well, with about 60/40 distribution with my #7 1/2 shot loads. Please note that these shotguns were chambered for 12ga 2 1/2″ shells, and perform best with roll crimps. RST makes compatible shells, or you can handload your own easily. In testing this shotgun, it ran best with 3 dram equivalent loads – 1oz at 1250fps cycled it properly.
As mentioned, this shotgun has been test fired and it works properly. This gun came to us as a parts gun – it had some components salvaged from it to fix another example. Ivan was able to create several new parts – the magazine release, magazine release spring, receiver takedown key, cam plate, and trigger plate screw. With these parts carefully fit to the gun, it is working properly again. These shotguns tend to be missing parts or have broken parts/not working, so this is a great opportunity for someone seeking a working example!
Another noteworthy aspect is that this shotgun does not have an import mark, and lacks the US-market markings – meaning it was brought to the United States before 1968, possibly as a World War Two bring-back. However, factory records and associated documentation for these guns was lost during the war, so tracing this history isn’t possible.

The gun is in good shape, and would make for a great shootable collectible. In terms of condition, it does have a previous repair to the forend on the left hand side close to the receiver. The rear sling swivel has been removed, but the hole is still present and a new sling swivel could be installed if you wanted to use a sling on this shotgun.
